There's this lady on livejournal who translates the novels a page per weekday! Currently she's finishing up book 3. http://toshosen-tsl.livejournal.com/

Reading the novels really gives much more insight into the wonderful world of toshokan sensou. And in the novels, the author touches alot on the political side too. Gives you a more indepth protrayal than the manga or anime could ever achieve. So glad i found that livejournal page haha

Thanks for your post!

I love reading and watching Naruto, but I get so sad sometimes because the women in Naruto are never as important as the male characters. I feel like the strong female characters are forced to sacrifice a part of their lives (as you mentioned) and are even killed (like Konan). I just wish the mangaka would make the women have as much power and importance as the billion male characters in the series. I love tsunade but i hate the fact that she is made to seem like she cares about how she looks (as you mentioned as well). I'm extremely depressed about Sakura, because she's supposed to be in Team 7 too. But she's is just made out to be a girl with a crush on a guy based on his looks, and won't move on even when he attempts to literally KILL her.

I love Naruto but I just wish it was an inspiring manga to girls as well. I hate the whole targeted to young boys bs.

Hi Jake!

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I've lost a lot of my interest and enthusiasm for this project, but intend to keep it up on the web so that other people can still read the posts. Hopefully it might inspire some thought among anime fans, or just help other feminist anime fans realize that they aren't alone.

I'd love to read your paper when it comes out, so if you publish it online, send a link! :) Good luck with your research, and I'm glad to know that there are young people who are interested in engaging with anime in a critical way, especially when it comes to gender.
